"Work brings freedom" gate |
I visited Dachau for several hours and still felt like I was rushing through the concentration camp. The camp was one of the first used and therefore had a lot of history, all of which was very sobering. In my mind the people were treated worse than the African slaves. People were put in the camps to "reform" them into good working citizens. They were denied freedom without due process of law. The memorial and museum at the camp were very factual. Everything seemed to be presented without emotion. I am not sure why it was presented this way. Perhaps that is the way all historical museums are in Europe.
The visit was what I expected: It made you sick, mad, sad, and yet hopeful.
